Many insurance companies offer the nurse practitioner liability insurance. Many of these insurance companies require that the nurse purchases other insurance through them before they are willing to cover the individual nurse. This further adds to the extreme costs of the insurance which many question the value of to begin with. Not many hospitals offer a group rate on the insurance because of the fluid nature of the nursing field. While the insurance could be standardized in price, allowing the most risky nurses to be covered the same as the low risk ones; the dangers of the insurance company losing too much money are too high for this to be a current consideration.



The nurse practitioner liability insurance does give those nurses who can afford some piece of mind. There are many ethical dilemmas that nurse face daily. Many of these dilemmas do not have a black and white answer and therefore can be very concerning to the nurse. The insurance enables the nurse to relax in that while the decision was difficult, if it was the wrong decision she is coved by an insurance plan that will protect her assets.



With so much at risk in the nursing field, it is little wonder that many people have decided not to be nurses. Those who have decided to follow this calling, and it is truly a calling, do so out of love for their fellow humans and the desire to assist them when they are sick or injured. It is a shame that this same desire for well-being and assistance is not shared by the public that these nurses attempt to service. If this were the case, the nurse would not need the nurse practitioner liability insurance and there would be no medical malpractice suites except in the extreme cases of neglect or dispassionate service.
